Over the last few years, the validity of our election processes has come under scrutiny, casting doubt on the integrity of our democratic system. As citizens and voters, we must understand and trust the mechanisms that ensure fair and transparent elections. In Blount County, the Blount County Election Commission plays a pivotal role in upholding these principles and safeguarding the integrity of our electoral process.

The Blount County Election Commission is tasked with overseeing all aspects of the electoral process, from voter registration to the certification of election results. Their mission is to ensure the integrity of every vote cast in Blount County by administering election law and procedures equally and fairly to all, by providing the most efficient, accurate and secure election process possible, and, in all our endeavors, exceeding the expectations of the voters, taxpayers and citizens of Blount County in accountability and competence.

Comprised of dedicated individuals from diverse backgrounds, the Election Commission operates with transparency, accountability, and a steadfast commitment to democratic ideals.

Blount County Election Commissioners:
Larry Garner, Chairman
Bob Carroll, Secretary
Patsy Lunde
Dan McCord, Jr.

There are currently two Republicans and two Democrats serving. Republicans would normally have 3 seat because the State House has a Republican majority. However, one Republican seat will be vacated March 5th. Republican commissioners are appointed by the local TN State Representatives and Senators, and the Democrats are appointed by the local Democratic Caucus. All nominations are submitted to the State Election Commission for final approval. They serve two year terms beginning April 1st of odd numbered years.

By implementing rigorous protocols for ballot handling, vote counting, and result certification, the commission works diligently to guarantee the security and integrity of our elections. Blount County’s voting machines have been converted to meet the legislative changes regarding paper ballots.  Please watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABLwA6ynIsg) to learn about the change and see how to vote on the machines.

It’s important to recognize that the validity of our elections rests not only on the actions of the election commission but also on the active participation and vigilance of citizens. By staying informed, exercising our right to vote, and holding elected officials and election administrators accountable, we contribute to the strength and resilience of our democratic institutions.
